Does Scratching the Eye Cause Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is one of the progressive diseases that cause the cornea to lose its shape and directly affect vision. Especially in the later stages, with the increase in corneal deformities, almost complete loss of vision may occur. We can talk about many different methods at the point of treatment of the disease, but another point that is as curious as the treatment here is why the disease occurs. The scientific world has done a lot of research on this subject. Although the exact cause is still unclear, we can say that some factors are more prominent. Scratching the eye is one of these factors.

The Relationship Between Scratching the Eye and Keratoconus

The desire to scratch the eye can sometimes occur due to an allergenic effect, sometimes due to a discomfort. Although it seems innocent, scratching the eye can actually have a very negative effect on eye health. Depending on the pressure you apply while scratching the eye, the scratching process causes the pressure on the cornea to increase.

This will cause thinning of the cornea and increase deformities. This situation may contribute to the formation of keratoconus and will cause an accelerating effect on the progression of the disease.

When we think in this way, we can say that scratching the eye is one of the main causes of keratoconus, according to experts. It should not only be characterised by keratoconus disease.

Constantly scratching the eye will also cause various injuries and damage to the cornea. To avoid these effects, we should avoid scratching the eye and focus on eliminating the effects that cause itching.
